One of my more popular maps for the Sven Co-op mod for Half-Life. I was strongly inspired by an old TFC map I played called K_TheGame. That map was one of the first to incorporate “real teamwork” in which you must physically “use” your team mates to reach the end. In its early stages, the series was only 2 maps long, and ran off of the Team Fortress engine, which was already very limited (no NPCs or weapons could be placed). After discovering Sven Co-op, I realized that the mod had everything the TF engine was missing, and so I decided to make the conversion. The result today is a hybrid of the original “teamwork” setting with a mixture of camera storytelling sequences, enemy NPCs to fight, hidden weapon caches, and much more.

Here is the map’s storyline as taken from the original MOTD file:

The strangest of events began to occur following the events of the resonance cascade at Black Mesa.

Scientists were slowly disappearing and the entire facility seemed to be falling to its knees.

A few scientists even went mad, destroying special equipment and harming other personnel.

At around 0200, a group of scientists were attacked by another group of researchers.

They were captured and brought to a laboratory, where the researchers conducted psychotic tests and

“unnecessary analysis” on them. The researchers threw the battered and beaten test subjects into a specimen

treatment cell in the Cell Block Sector… and left them there to die. YOU are these test subjects. You have only

one objective, to escape from Black Mesa and regain your freedom! You must escape the Nightmare before you!

“…Will you escape?”

The primary objective of Nightmare is to test your ability to work as a team, through countless numbers of coop puzzles such as:

  • Ducking down to boost another teammate into a vent or onto a higher level
  • Holding open a door for another player to get through
  • The infamous “double button” in which two separate buttons need to be activated at the same time by two different players.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The very beginning of the series.  To wrap up the story in a nutshell, you are a group of scientists who survived the resonance cascade incident that occurred in the original Half-Life story. Immediately following the disaster, many of the exits to the facility were either sealed off completely or locked away by the military authorities in order to prevent the secret of Black Mesa from ever getting out to the public.  As a result of this, many scientists became deranged and began to lose their sanity. As you and your friends were deciding what to do, you were attacked by a group of these “mad scientists” and taken hostage. You were tested on for hours on end and thrown into the Cell Block Sector (referred to here-on-in as the CBS), 5 miles below where the disaster originally occurred.

You begin locked in the cell and have to use a teammate to climb into a vent in the ceiling to escape.  You start with no weaponry and must build your arsenal as you proceed through the maps. Finding the secret “Volcom Stone” will grant you a bonus weapon for usage during gameplay.

In this sector, the main reactor silo, “Silo D” has become flooded due to a water main rupture following the cascade. All of the elevators have had their power cut and every physical route has been sealed off, leaving the survivors the only option of draining the silo and proceeding through the drain into the Sewer Sector B.

Cell Block Sector.. Players begin inside the cells on the left and right

One of the many puzzles you will encounter in BM Nightmare

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The survivors have dropped down the drain into the Sewer Sector B of Black Mesa. This is heavily a maintenance area which connects the Cell Block Sector to Sector D, Black Mesa’s Waste Processing Plant. The main objective in this map is to reach the surface access elevator in Sector B, one of the only remaining working freight elevators in Black Mesa, and use it to hopefully reach the surface.
